Assateague Adventures FAQs

Which Tour time is the best?

We recommend booking the tour that offers the best chances to experience what interests you the most. Usually this means knowing the tides. If you are most interested in exploring lots of creeks and a higher probability (never guaranteed) of seeing larger wildlife, such as ponies, then we recommend booking the tour nearest high tide. If you are more interested in getting a hands on experience with nature, holding critters and exploring a secluded beach then we recommend booking near low tide. If you need any guidance booking you can check out the local tide chart (we recommend using the app called "Tides") or give us a call/text and we would be happy to assist you!

What wildlife can we expect to see?

The waterways around Chincoteague and Assateague Islands are home to an abundance of wildlife including ponies, dolphins, sting rays, a beautiful variety of birds, and much more. We take you to the best places to maximize your potential wildlife sightings. Every day is different in this habitat, so there is no telling what we might encounter on any given day. Nature is unpredictable and we cannot make any guarantees as to what you will see (no one can).

What should I bring with me?

Bring plenty of water to drink, water shoes, bug spray and sun protection.

What should I wear?

A hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen are highly recommended during the sunny summer months. Loose fitting, light weight outdoor clothing that will dry quickly is ideal for paddling, but any kind of clothing you would wear to the beach works well. Long sleeve and long pants are great for sun and bug protection. Water shoes are also a plus.

Are reservations required?

Yes. Please call 757-990-5954 to make a reservation.

Where do your tours leave from?

We are a mobile unit that meets at 7470 Memorial Park Dr, Chincoteague, VA 23336 on the east side of Chincoteague Island. Click here to open the location in google maps

Are your tours physically demanding?

Kayaking is a physically intensive exercise. We recommend having at-least a moderate physical fitness level.

Is it common to give gratuity to my guide?

It is customary in the United States to give a gratuity to service staff who have done a great job, just as you would for your server at a restaurant. Our guides work very hard to give you the best experience possible! Typical gratuity ranges from 10% -20% based on your experience. It is not required, but greatly appreciated.

Is there a weight limit?

Yes. A tandem kayak holds up to 500lbs and a single kayak holds up to 300lbs. We do have the option to convert a tandem kayak into a single kayak to accommodate larger paddlers if necessary. Please let us know in advance so we can accommodate.

What is the age limit?

Assateague Adventures tours are suitable for almost everyone 5 and up with at-least moderate physical ability.

What if I have more than 12 people?

That’s okay! If you call far enough in advance we will be able to accommodate your own private tour!

Is it difficult?

Simply said, kayaking is a workout. Combine that with the tides and winds Chincoteague and Assateague and you have a tougher workout! Make sure you feel confident in your fitness level and experience before booking a tour, as many have overestimated their ability before, and we’re not able to enjoy the experience as it is intended.

Can I choose my own kayak?

No, our guides (usually me and Jess) will end up choosing the kayak for you, ether a tandem or a single. If you would like to reserve a specific style of kayak (tandem or single) a reservation will have to be made in advance and is subject to availability. Usually, the tandems are much easier if you have a partner as the currents and winds can be a challenge than if you were kayaking solo.
